Meet Muffinhead - Adopt-a-less-Adoptable

The Victoria Pet Adoption Society has featured Muffinhead during the Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable because he is diabetic. He is currently in foster care, but has been looking for a new family for well over a year now.
I wanted to feature VPAS because of the good work they do and also,our little Milly came from there. The staff can actually still remember her, because of her fear she was around for a long time waiting for someone to adopt her. The story of Muffinhead is similar in a way in that he needs someone who is comfortable managing his diabetes and where there are no other pets or children.
Muffinhead would love to become your new best friend. He is quiet yet affectionate and will do almost anything for treats. He is very good at lounging, sun bathing, and stretching out, and he never turns down a good tummy rub.

It's heart-warming that so many bloggers out there are doing great things for animals in need. If you have a blog (and it can be any kind of blog) you can help too! Each year, more than 4 million dogs end up in shelters and breed rescue organizations. Pedigree created The PEDIGREE Adoption Drive to help the plight of these homeless dogs.
It's so easy, just write a post and for each blog that publishes a post about the Pedigree Adoption Drive by Sunday, September 19th, Pedigree will donate a 20lb bag of food to shelter dogs!

An early Worthy Wednesday

I saw this posted on Dog Milk last week and just had to include it in my Worthy Wednesday feature. It really is all for a good cause, Species Spectrum is (in their words) 'creating a buzz for rescue, shelter and sanctuary animals through modern design, photography and wit'.
They have a unique collection of greetings cards with a fun picture of the animal, whether it be a dog, cat, pig, fish or bunny, complete with a humerous bio of the pet. Everything has been done just right by printing on recycled paper and donating a portion of the sale to rescue animals. There are so many on the website to choose from, go take a peek!

The 2010 BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk for the animals is this weekend. It's BC SPCA's signature event bringing together animal lovers all over the province.
There are 36 different locations joining in to try and beat last years success by raising more than $1.1 million for animals in need.

Worthy wednesday- Fun Time Dog Shop

Here's a company that has a huge heart - Fun Time Dog Shop.

                                                                         
The Fun Time Dog Shop has a big goal to help support all the homeless dogs that are placed in shelters each year. On their website they offer high quality products, at a reasonable price, for people and their dogs - and absolutely all the after-cost profits from the products purchased at Fun Time Dog Shop are donated to their featured non-profit dog rescue groups.
When you visit the site you'll find all your favorites, from beds to collars to treats and toys. Just getting your pet stuff from here and knowing that you're helping other dogs in need is what blanket loves!
Every few months Fun Time Dog Shop rotates the non-profit rescue groups to receive the funds and at the check-out you will be asked to select a featured non-profit group to benefit from your purchase - so how great is that!
I spent a long time looking through all the products they offer, but you should really visit the site and see for yourself. It makes so much sense to get what you need from companies that give back...not a decision that needs a lot of thought!
One of the many products that caught my attention was the Thundershirt. This has been recommended by vets and trainers to help dogs with certain anxieties. It's gentle, constant pressure can bring calm and focus back to your dog so they can relax. It can be a solution for many anxieties and can be adjusted for different sizes. I know a few dogs that could definitely benefit from this and to think that somebody actually thought of this product...love it!

   

All the products they have to offer are carefully thought about, so treating and protecting your pet really does help others!

Sweet Nina

This sweet cat Nina, was taken into BCSPCA as a pregnant stray in July 2007. Her kittens were soon adopted (as the norm with little babies), but poor Nina had to wait until the November of 2007 to get adopted. She was very happy in her new home and her new owners loved her very much, but on May 20, Nina broke her leg and the owners couldn’t pay for the surgery. They had to make the agonizing decision to surrender her. Nina’s surgery went well but she now needs 6 long weeks of kennel rest. The Blanket Fund has been able to help with some of her medical costs, but she needs a forever home and loads more love!
Thank you to all the people who support the Blanket Fund, it's only because of you we are able to help.

A Little Help

Tagged for a good cause

Last week I was tagged by a new blogger buddy SadieShihtzu who tasked me with showing the 10th photo of my poopers that had been featured on 'under the blanket'. Also, I am required to tag 5 other people and, as it is a Worthy Wednesday, I thought it a good idea to introduce you to 5 peeps that have a similar ethic to blanket in that they help animals and/or the environment. But first of all here is my picture of Milly and Poppet, you can read about them and see pictures here.

1. Photographer Melissa McDaniel. Not only does she take fantastic photos of deaf and rescue dogs for her books, she also raises money to help them. I have been watching Melissa with interest for some time and am always impressed by her tireless efforts to raise much-needed funds.

Melissa became a deaf-dog advocate as soon as she adopted her deaf border-collie mix Sadie from a local shelter. She was dropped off at the shelter, along with her littermates, after her owners discovered their dog’s puppies were all deaf. Thousands of dogs are put to sleep each year because they are deaf. Three to four million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters across the U.S. each year. The dog photo books are raising awareness and helping to make a positive change.

2. Like Kittysville makes really cool kitty beds!
She makes the beds from a lifelong collection of retro fabrics which are matched only by a lifelong devotion to her collection of rescued and formerly feral cats. View the kitty beds here
A sizable chunk of her sales goes toward an endless supply of cat food and spay/neuter/vet care for the dozens of feral and abandoned cats that find their way to the Kittysville porch!

3.You gotta love Eco-pup. This BC based company specializes in luxury organic and eco-friendly designer dog clothing and accessories for your pets. Their products are made with love from organic, natural and recycled materials Read all about their recycling and see the really cool gear here  Visiting the blog is a must as Poppet is the star attraction, for the moment.

4.Ground Cloud is a blog written by a  beautiful white cat called Little Guy (and other cute names). Little Guy posts stunning pictures of himself and every Friday has a BCSPCA adopt a cat day. So great effort Little Guy!

5.Doggybytes is a very informative blog and is great for really useful tips on everything to do with caring for your dog. Its purpose is to provide useful dog/puppy related information, product recommendations and entertainment. Jim favours “environmentally friendly” dog products and in his words (quote)  "I love our environment as much as I love Sweety my Border collie". He also has adopted Zeus, a stray Pit Bull from our local SPCA.

These are some of my favourite bloggers giving us all a great example to follow. Watch out for Worthy Wednesdays where I'll be continuing to to discover and feature more like them.

Worthy Wednesday

Last Wednesday I featured some great ideas for recycling old brollies and fire hoses into very nice stuff for dogs and thought that I would make this a regular feature. There are so many creative people out there doing great things for animal charities and recycling, so I thought it a good idea to showcase them under the blanket. This week is Black Baron Kingdom. These gals from Winnipeg, Canada, create this unique animal clothing that is handmade with used and vintage goods, utilizing as much of the original garment as possible. On certain items a donation is made to an animal charity.

Cats can wear them too

Rescued pets

We attended an SPCA fund-raising event at the weekend, and exchanging stories about rescued pets reminded us of when we adopted our two little poopers. So, today wanted to share with you some pics of them...cos we are so proud.

'Poppet' arrived after recovering from being found very ill and was nurtured back to health by Dee's Orphan Kitten Fund. She soon settled in and is a real live wire. Milly however, had been found very skinny with kittens and super-scared. After a long stay with Victoria Pet Adoption Society we brought her home. She sat in this little bed (her's from the shelter) in the corner of the spare room for three full months while we earned her trust with patience and kindness. She never dared to leave that corner until we were asleep, but then she would check out the house and play with her toys. Finally, one day, after hearing Poppet running around she beat her fears, left the room, and never went back! (Catherine at VPAS and Kerry at Dee's, I hope you enjoy this post and see how they've grown.)

As you can see they are just great together. Poppet had lost her mum and Milly her kittens so the match was perfect. It's so great to hear others people rescue stories so, if you have one let me know.

What can you do with a broken umbrella? How about making fabulously stylish clothes for dogs AND raising money to help animal charities? I first saw this on Dog Milk and loved the vision of Taryn Zychal who handmakes these dog coats in any size complete with hood and Eco-Fi felt or vintage lining.  For each broken umbrella received $1 is given to an animal charity. Now thats something to give you a really warm feeling! Just visit the site and choose which brolly you want to transform.

How about treating your dog to a handcrafted dog collar and toys made from recycled firefighting equipment? I found these products from Rekindled Pride on Phetched 

 Each collar is unique and tells a story of bravery and sacrifice and a portion of sales goes to various charities.

Every little helps

I have followed Project 71 for a little while now and admire their tireless mission to provide comfort to shelter dogs. You have probably seen the dog beds they create (which you can buy and donate to a shelter), but you might not realize that they also do a wide variety of stuff with a variety of dog images.

Coasters, mouse pads, mugs shirts - whatever, but important to note that a portion of their profits go to animal shelters. A sentiment very close to our hearts here at blanketID.

The King and I

It was so nice to receive this from the Victoria branch of the SPCA yesterday. We are so pleased that we are able to help and hope this encourages others to do the same.

"The funds donated by blanketID, have helped Musashi and other animals that need medical treatment. It would be a very sad fate for the sick and injured animals if we didn’t have the financial support of donors and companies such as blanketID".

So, we would like to introduce you to our latest animals in need. This adorable little bundle, Musashi, was adopted in November, but was returned to the SPCA after developing a corneal ulcer. After successful treatment Musashi is recovering at the SPCA. Like the script of a Disney movie, during her ordeal Musashi has developed a deep friendship with another cat, Mowgli, who usually doesn't like other cats but tends to rule the roost at the shelter. He has become affectionately known as 'The King' and together they are the shelter's power couple.

Both beautiful cats are now ready for a permanent home and it would be a great end to this movie if they were able to stay together and begin a new and more settled chapter in their adventures. Please contact the SPCA if you can help.

Celebration: Olympics and Valentines

This is the weekend for celebration and love. If you happen to be in the area pay a visit to the See Ya Later Ranch winery in the Okanagan region of BC.
The winery has a great  history of caring for dogs- read the story behind the label here whilst enjoying a bottle or two of their delicious wine!

Visitors will enjoy See Ya Later Ranch vintages “soul-mated” with a palate pleasing morsel created by Chef Roger Planiden .This event is being hosted for Valentines Day together with the Okanagan branch of the BCSPCA.
